It is produced using Chlorine gas and Hydrogen Gas from membrane cells.

Properties:

  • Hydrochloric Acid is a clear and colourless liquid.
  • It is toxic, threshold limit is 5ppm.
  • It is corrosive.

Applications:
It finds use in metal clearing, descaling, bleaching, hydrolysing agent and industrial solvent for inorganic compounds.

Steel pickling Food processing.
Ore refining Activation of Petroleum Wells.
Hydrolyzing agent Catalyst in organic process.
Scale removal Removal of heavy metal from carbon black and activated carbon.

Stability:
Hydrochloric acid is thermally stable up to approximately 15000c but appreciable dissociation occurs above this temperature. It is an aggressive reagent and attacks almost all metals and alloys.
